Route types and cost differences

IEPL, relay and direct routes are not simply ranked from best to worst. The right choice depends on path design, target region, access network and use case. Evaluate stability, regional match and connection continuity together.

IEPL

IEPL routes connect the local access point to the target exit through a more stable international path, so public-internet fluctuations usually have less impact on the middle section. They are better suited to sustained transfers, video meetings, remote desktops, long-running file sync and work that depends on connection continuity. Do not focus only on the exit city; confirm where the target service is actually deployed. If the service is in Japan, a Japan IEPL route usually follows a more sensible path than routing through another continent.

IEPL resources generally cost more to organize and maintain than ordinary paths, so there is no need to keep all traffic on them. Lightweight tasks such as reading webpages and searching for information can use relay or direct routes, while reserving IEPL for persistent connections, real-time collaboration and sustained transfers makes plan traffic more practical.

Relay routes

A relay route sends device traffic first to an intermediate node with better access quality, which then connects to the target region. Its main benefit is avoiding unstable public-internet segments between the local network and a distant exit while retaining broad regional choice. Everyday browsing, browser-based AI tools, streaming and routine office work can all start with a relay route test.

Relay paths add a routing step, so the actual experience depends on the match between the access point, relay and exit. The shortest geographic distance is not always best: local carrier interconnection, the target service region and time of day can all change the result. If the current route loads intermittently, try another relay in the same target region rather than immediately switching to a completely different country or region.

Direct routes

A direct route connects the local network straight to the target exit, with a simpler path and fewer routing steps. It suits environments with good connectivity between the local network and the target region, lighter access tasks or a need for a specific regional exit. For web searches, text communication and short sessions, a direct route is often a sensible first option to test.

Direct routes depend more heavily on the immediate performance of the local network and the international public internet, so results can differ noticeably between access environments. Good home broadband performance does not guarantee the same result on an office or public network. If direct access is unstable, switch to a relay or IEPL route in the same region instead of repeatedly reconnecting to the same path. Everyday browsing

For international websites, research and text-based work, start with a nearby relay or direct route that offers a stable connection. These tasks usually have fewer regional identity requirements than streaming, so prioritize continuous page loading and reliable DNS resolution. If the target site has no regional restriction, there is no need to choose a distant exit; a longer path adds intermediate steps and makes troubleshooting harder.

If images load slowly or some page resources fail, first switch to another route in the same region, then check browser extensions, system proxy settings and the local network. Keeping the target region unchanged helps determine whether the issue comes from the current path or the website itself.

Streaming

Streaming platforms typically check the exit region, account region, content rights area and device environment together. First identify the library you want to access, then choose an exit in the corresponding country or region. Test Japan routes for Japanese content and US routes for US content, rather than choosing a region solely for geographic proximity.

If the platform homepage opens but a specific title still reports a regional mismatch, sign out first and clear the old session, then reconnect through a backup route in the same region. Set the target region first

Start with the service region, content rights region or deployment region of the work system. Once the region is correct, compare IEPL, relay and direct routes. This avoids mistaking a regional mismatch for a route failure.

Keep test conditions consistent

Compare routes using the same device, local network and target service. Do not change the exit, browser and access network at the same time, or it will be difficult to tell which change affected the connection.

Keep a backup path for regular tasks

For frequently used regions, keep an IEPL, relay or direct route as an alternative. When the current path is affected by local interconnection or a platform adjustment, switching directly to a backup route in the same region is usually clearer than rebuilding a session across regions.

Separate network issues from account issues
